We can thank Johnny Cash for the discovery of Sammi Smith.

Actually, Cash's bass player discovered her singing in a night club in Oklahoma City in 1967. Once Cash heard her sing, though, he helped her sign with Columbia Records.

In the 1970s, country music was going in two different directions: outlaw and a more mainstream pop sound. She was a different kind of female country singer than what we were used to seeing. Smith was one of the few women in the outlaw country movement.

She recorded her debut single "He's Everywhere", which made the Top 25 on the country charts, but struck gold with "Help Me Make It Through The Night" in 1971.

The song pushed the envelope. Record companies were uncomfortable with the song's honest sexuality, but listeners begged to differ. It sold over two million copies.

"Help Me Make It Through The Night" was written by Kris Kristofferson for his 1970 album Kristofferson. Kristofferson was more known as a songwriter at the time than he was as a singer, and after the success of this song, he and Smith became household names.

Smith won a Grammy for "Help Me Make It Through The Night" for Best Female Country Vocal Performance.

Her version is one of the most successful country songs of all time in terms of sales, popularity and radio play. It topped the country singles charts and also climbed the pop singles chart.

Watch Smith perform "Help Me Make It Through The Night" below.

Lyrics Below

Take the ribbon from my hair
Shake it loose and let it fall
Layin' soft against your skin
Like the shadow on the wall

Come and lay down by my side
Till the early mornin' light
All I'm takin' is your time
Help me make it through the night

I don't care what's right or wrong
And I won't try to understand
Let the devil take tomorrow
Lord, tonight I need a friend

Yesterday is dead and gone
And tomorrow's out of sight
And it's sad to be alone
Help me make it through the night

And it's sad to be alone
Help me make it through the night
I don't want to be alone
Help me make it through the night
