Two years ago, God blessed Joey and Rory Feek with a special gift. Indiana Boon Feek was born, almost twelve years after Joey and Rory got married. In a blog post written just one month before Indy's birth, Rory shared the touching story of Joey's decision to become a mother.
"It's not that she didn't like kids, she just never saw herself having any," Rory wrote. “When Joey and I got married in 2002, she made it very clear that she was never going to be having a baby. She had never wanted to be a mama, never liked holding babies or had any kind of yearning to be a mom."
While Joey never developed a desire to have a baby, she did desire to trust God with her fears, Rory shared. “So one day about a year and a half ago, she gave it to Him, and said 'if you want us to have a baby Lord, I want what you want'. And that was it. She went off birth control and almost a year went by and though she’d have her moment’s of wanting to 'take it back' from God, she remained faithful and trusting. This past June, on Father’s Day to be exact, she and we found out she was pregnant.”
Indiana was born “at home at 12:03 pm with the assistance of a midwife and the birth experience was perfect. She was delivered breech, naturally, with no medical assistance,” Rory Feek wrote at the time.
Rory documented Joey's labor and delivery and turned it into a music video for their song "If I Needed You." The song would garner the couple a Grammy nomination, something that they never saw coming. Rory shared Joey's reaction to the news when nominations were announced in December.
"...woke my bride up this morning with a baby in my arms and the news that our version of 'If I Needed You' was nominated for a Grammy," Rory shared. "As her excitement and tears flowed into mine, she said, 'How can that be?'"
Rory explained that their first Grammy nod was a surprise as the song "received no radio airplay ... no press ... no critical acclaim."
"God is so good," Rory wrote of the nomination. "Thank you, thank you, thank you."
Less than a week after the release of a new album, three days after the anniversary of their first date, and just two days after the excitement of the Grammy awards ceremony, the couple will be celebrating yet another occasion.
Today they will celebrate Indy's birthday at their Indiana home where Joey is currently in hospice care with terminal cancer. The Gruffalo-themed celebration will be special, but will take place around Joey's needs, according to the latest blog post from Rory.
"Our plan is to put streamers up around Joey’s bed and move Indiana’s high-chair in beside her, so Joey can be part of it. So she can watch our little-one eat her cupcake and rip the wrapping paper off her gifts," Rory wrote. "But Joey is very fragile right now, and so with all of these plans we have, we will need to adjust for what my wife needs."
From the looks of a new video posted this morning by Rory, the celebration has already begun!
