American Idol hopeful Trent Harmon gave the performance of the night during Wednesday's show. The 24-year old has had a rocky road since receiving his ticket to Hollywood at the Little Rock auditions as he sang his way through mono to land a spot in the Top 24.
Last night, Harmon and 11 other competitors took the stage in Los Angeles hoping to make their way into the Top 14. Only seven from last night's group will make it through and if judge and audience response is any indication, Harmon has nothing to worry about. The Mississippi farm boy played the guitar as he delivered a fantastic rendition of Chris Stapleton's debut country single, "What Are You Listening To."
Judge Jennifer Lopez couldn't contain her exclaimed over Harmon's performance and said, “Trent, I really love you.”
She continued, “I feel like when you sing, it really gets to my heart. There’s something that happens when you sing. It's the tone of your voice. It's the feeling that you sing with. You really have something that I feel is going to be in the competition for a long time.”
Keith Urban agreed with Lopez. "I thought it was a tremendous song choice. What's really interesting about it is that no one really knows it, but it's such a good song with such a good lyric that when you hit the 'what are you listening to?' everybody here was like 'Oh, that's a great song! What a cool song!.' And you sang it really well, I thought."
Harry Connick Jr. had a different feeling about the song. While not overly critical, he wasn't thrilled with the performance. "Trent, you're one of the most gifted vocalists here. I'm not sure whether it was the type of song that you chose, but it wasn't the Trent that I've come to sit on the edge of my seat with great expectations."
