Brantley Gilbert is very open about his support for the military, and that's one of the many reasons we love him.
He is very involved with the organization Wounded Warriors Project, which offers a variety of programs, service and events for wounded veterans of the military. As of June 1st, 2015, WWP serves 71,866 alumni and 11,494 registered members.
Brantley helped launch an event called "Rolling Odyssey" with WWP, which is a motorcycle ride from Houston to Baton Rouge and back.
At "Rolling Odyssey" he formed a extremely special bond with a veteran named Justin Patterson. The two previously met at another WWP event where Gilbert gave Patterson his rosary.
After riding the 544 miles together, Patterson wanted to thank Gilbert for everything he has done for WWP and raising awareness for veterans who have come home from being deployed.
Patterson gave Gilbert his first purple heart. "My blood, sweat and tears are on this and that's how I earned it," he said. “I’d like to give you my first purple heart.”
Gilbert was stunned and Patterson was in tears. It's an extremely emotional moment that both of them will remember forever.
Fast forward almost a year and the two still remain connected. On Friday (Feb. 26th), Gilbert shared a video of Patterson calling him out in a push-up challenge.
This wasn't just any push-up challenge, it was for a good cause - one close to Gilbert's heart.
"I'm here to do the 22 push-ups for 22 days to raise suicide awareness for veterans," Patterson says in the video. "22 veterans a day take their owns lives."
The charity that is behind the push-up challenge is 22KILL. The group's mission is to empower and honor those who've served and to raise veteran suicide awareness.
22KILL has a goal of reaching 22 million push ups, and you can all help by clicking here.
