Beer yoga. Yes, you read that right. And, as funny as it sounds to combine beer drinking and yoga, it’s no joke.
“We take the philosophies of yoga and pair it with the pleasure of beer-drinking to reach your highest level of consciousness,” says BeerYoga, the website behind the movement.
BeerYoga was founded in Berlin, Germany, in 2015 by Jhula, a yoga instructor who was inspired after watching people drink beer while doing yoga at the Burning Man festival.
“Basically, I played around with it in my room with a Radler [half beer, half lemonade or soda],” Jhula said. “I took standard vinyasa sequences, which most people have done a bunch of times, and tried to figure out everywhere I could work beer in there.”
Jhula and her BeerYoga co-founder Emily took their idea to various bars, festivals, birthday parties, and even the outdoors. The BeerYoga experience is gaining traction worldwide, and while it has yet to land in the U.S., similar experiences can be had by breweries offering in-house yoga sessions. While they don’t drink during the session, they do offer beer as a post-workout refreshment.
“BeerYoga is the marriage of two great loves – beer and yoga. Both are centuries-old therapies for body, mind and soul. The joy of drinking beer and the mindfulness of yoga compliment each other, and make for an energizing experience.”
