When George Jones was first offered the song "He Stopped Loving Her Today", he wanted nothing to do with it.
According to Bob Allen's biography of The Possum, producer Billy Sherrill says that Jones thought the song was "too long, too sad, too depressing and that nobody would ever play it...He hated the melody and wouldn't learn it."
He reluctantly recorded and released the song, although he didn't have any faith in it. Much to his surprise, "He Stopped Loving her Today" shot straight to No. 1 and stayed for 18 weeks.
It was a time where he had not had a No. 1 song in six years and people were beginning to write him off. He previously credited it for reviving his career and is considered one of the greatest country songs of all time.
The song became so legendary that few country singers dare to cover it.
Billy Ray Cyrus was up for the challenge for the Forever Country Series with the CMA in conjunction with the epic "Forever Country" song and celebration of the 50th CMA Awards later this year.
Cyrus put his own spin on the legendary song, but still managed to stay true to the original.
