For The First Time, Blake Shelton Explains How He ‘Woke Up’ In Love With Gwen

His divorce cut him deep, but in a surprise moment he reveals that he found himself falling hard for someone who connected so deeply with him.

During a very emotional and telling interview with Billboard, country superstar Blake Shelton opened up, in a new way, about how he started falling for his girlfriend, Gwen Stefani – and what kind of an affect that had on him.

If you listen intently to the songs on his latest album, If I’m Honest, he says that you’ll be able to learn some of the fact that surrounded his high-profile split from Miranda Lambert, but beyond that – his album reveals his deep-seated love for the woman that “saved his life”, Gwen Stefani.

When Shelton began filming for the first few episodes of The Voice’s ninth season, he realized that he had to tell his co-workers what was going on, so that when the episodes aired, and his divorce was finalized, they wouldn’t be referencing Miranda as his wife. As expected, everyone was very supportive of their friend and colleague, but there was an unexpected surprise waiting for him…

While they hadn’t known each other well from just working on one season together, Shelton and Stefani seemed to bond quickly from those first couple of days.

After informing his fellow coaches of his current plight, he says Gwen reacted in an incredible way.

“I looked over at Gwen — who I didn’t really know — and she had these huge tears in her eyes. I thought, ‘Wow, she feels super bad for me!’ “

She too was going through a soon-to-be high profile divorce, but hadn’t announced it yet. It gave her a unique and beautiful way to connect with Shelton, and they began talking.

“I thought it was going to be another one of those things-are-going-to-be-OK talks,” he explained. “She didn’t tell me much, because we didn’t know each other at the time, but she said, ‘I’m going through something very similar to what you’re going through. I understand. And I hate it.’ That’s kind of how our friendship and bond started, that day.

“It went from that, to checking in on each other once a week through email — ‘This shit happened to me, what happened to you?’ — to maybe three times a week, then every day, to ‘Hey, here’s my phone number if you ever want to text.’ Next thing I know, I wake up and she’s all I care about, and I’m wondering if she feels the same about me.”

And it only grew from there. They began recalling the similarities between their divorces and were in such unique positions, that it seems only they could have truly understood one another.

Gwen saved my life. Who else on earth could understand going through a high-profile divorce from another musician? You can’t even imagine the similarities in our divorces.”

Since that time, their relationship has blossomed, even culminating in a hit duet that they co-wrote and sang together live multiple times.
