On Tuesday (October 25), Glen Campbell and his wife, Kim, celebrated their 34th anniversary. But, as Kim pointed out on her blog, it's hard to celebrate an anniversary with someone who doesn't remember you.
In a heartbreaking post, Kim shared that because of Glen's Alzheimer's, he is unable to recall the special memories most couples reflect on when their anniversary rolls around. As she writes, "You certainly cannot ask, 'Remember when we first met?' or 'Do you know how many years it's been?' You can't very well have an intimate, candlelight dinner and then make love to someone who no longer knows who you are."
So Kim decided to do the remembering for Glen as well as herself, and started looking through old cards and letters they had exchanged over the years. In her search, she found a romantic, handwritten letter that Glen had given her for their 25th anniversary. She made it clear how much the letter means to her, writing, "I probably treasure this above everything he's ever given me!"
Glen's letter to his wife was simple, but full of affection, as he thanked her for giving him their three children and for being his friend. His full letter read:
Forgive me for my faults
Words cannot convey how I feel about you. You are my light to this world. You are my world. Wow – 25 – seems like yesterday. Thank you for giving me 3 wonderful children. Thank you for being my light in the world. You are the most wonderful woman and a dear – dear – friend, my lover, my hope, my light. I love you, I love you, I love you. Thank you for being my friend. Your loving husband, You are the best! I will try harder.
I love you,
Kim also shared a photo of the actual letter itself. It makes it even more touching to see the words in Glen's own handwriting.
