Jennifer Nettles & John Glosson Deliver Powerful “How Great Thou Art” Performance

Back in May of 2012, ABC debuted a new and promising show called “Duet”. Similar to the hit NBC competition “The Voice”, which was debuted in April on 2011, this show was also a vocal competition in which a panel of four judges searched nationwide for two promising artists to recruit and perform with throughout the competitive season. Essentially, the two bottom performers of the night were given the opportunity to compete with each other, allowing the winner of the battle to continue with the competition and sending the other competitor packing.

With the panel consisting of Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, Robin Thicke, and Jennifer Nettles, it was destined to be a star-studded season. Although the show was abruptly canceled shortly after the first season, it has been a memorable performance between Nettles and one of her talented partners, John Glosson, that continues to impress viewers even years past its airing. 

Nettles, widely recognized for her lead role in the country duo known as “Sugarland”, assisted Glosson in narrowing down a song that complied with the week’s criteria, “songs that inspire”. Glosson ultimately decided upon the hymn “How Great Thou Art”, identifying the meaning behind this song to correlate with the loss of his older brother to Leukemia the day after Glosson’s parents learned his mother was pregnant with Glosson. Upon learning of this tragic story, Nettles was unable to fight back tears during multiple rehearsals of the incredibly touching number.

However, once the two prodigies took to the stage, their performance was pure talent and grace. Glosson, sporting a purple button up under his pristine blazer, stunned the audience with his vocal power and range, only to be joined by a beaming, goddess-like Nettles who so skillfully provided him with an impeccable harmony.

The two continue their duet with immense strength, both emotional and vocal. Their performance, one of true heart and emotion, has continued to not only make a name for Glosson, ultimately placing 2nd in the competition, but for Nettles, who showcases her incredible vocal abilities.
