Country music trailblazer and timeless legend Johnny Cash continues to add to his listener's woes with his heartbreaking hits even well beyond his years, residing in the hearts and playlists of fans who consider his music the best of its kind. The former Air Force member went on to shake the world of music, snagging chart-topping songs and even his own show airing on ABC exclusively titled The Johnny Cash Show. It was there that Cash sang with a variety of performers and groups, as one specific gospel-channeling band of dedicated men remained near and dear to his heart.
The Statler Brothers sang back up for Cash, who initially discovered the band, as they also wrote the legend a tribute song, "We Got Paid By Cash". Becoming a regular act on the show, the group became a familiar part of Cash's televised experience, partaking in a holiday song that continues to shatter those who listen. Accompanied by the legend himself, the men wore what resembled military uniforms while somberly singing "Blue Christmas". While Cash took the lead on vocals, the band angelically harmonized with the singer and lifted the ballad to searing new heights.
Cash gave an incredibly emotional performance, carrying the crippling lyrics with his iconic, deep tone. Aside from the military attire, the men took to a scene that replicated a tent, complete with the classic military green cots and various pieces of luggage. Perhaps alluding to the difficult holidays that military members endure due to relocations and lack of family, this resonated with a vast number of viewers who have experienced the crushing pain of being alone on the holidays.
