From the outside looking in, Julianne Hough appears to be living the American dream. She is engaged to longtime boyfriend and professional hockey player, Brooks Laich, and has experienced a successful career in acting, singing, and dancing. However, in her personal life, her family has been quietly living with a hard truth.

Hough revealed on her Instagram that her beloved grandmother, Colleen Pearl Henrietta, is suffering from dementia. Alongside an adorable video of her and her grandmother, Hough describes the pain she feels having to watch her grandmother suffer but describes her as "being very high functioning."

"It's been hard to see her living with dementia while still being very high functioning," writes Hough. "She has trouble with her short term but her long term is incredible...She gets to let the little things go and is always present."

Dementia is a type of brain disorder that impacts the performance of one's daily activities as well as their ability to communicate. According to the World Health Organization, 47.5 million people around the world are sufferig from the horrifying disease. While not directly related, Alzheimer's disease is responsible for the vast majority of dementia cases.

You can watch the video of Hough and her grandmother in the video below.
