One of the brightest faces in country music, longtime beloved CMT Radio star has just revealed to his fans that he is gay.
Always beaming with a smile and known for having a fun time no matter what was going on, one of CMT Radio's biggest names has been fighting a battle inside - for years. Now, he's finally ready to open up about what he's been struggling with.
The longstanding radio personality, CMT's Cody Alan, opened up on social media earlier today, and revealed a secret that he's decided to share.
"2017. As we start a new year, there is something I want to share with you. You see, I’m gay," Alan says in his heartfelt post. "This is not a choice I made, but something I've known about myself my whole life."
Originally from South Carolina, the country radio host says that he began struggling with his sexuality when he was very young, saying to People, "I remember having distinct feelings early in my life. I knew this about myself, and I had a really hard time dealing with it. I was so ashamed of who I was."
Now 44 years old, Alan endured much of his life trying to hide a part of himself that those feelings of shame stemmed from. At 24, he got married and started a family.
"I felt like getting married was what I was supposed to do,” Alan continues telling the publication. “It’s what everyone wanted me to do, and I felt, somehow, like maybe that’s what would make me straight — and obviously that’s not how it works! But I dreamed of that family, which I now have."
After deciding that continuing his marriage would not be fair to his wife, they agreed on a divorce, which is when Alan started to look at his future with a fresh set of eyes and sought out true happiness for himself.
He began opening up about his sexuality by coming out to people closest to him - his family and dear friends.
With the positive reactions from those people, Alan began looking for love again and has since found it, but his journey wasn't complete yet - he felt that in order to be truly fulfilled, he needed to have complete self-acceptance.
It was that journey that brought him to where he is today, and allowed him the courage and confidence to open up to the world about himself.
Alan says that now he's ready to share his whole self with the world, he drew upon inspiration from major stars in country music who came out long before him, like Chely Wright, Ty Herndon, and Billy Gilman.

2017. As we start a new year, there is something I want to share with you. You see, I’m gay. This is not a choice I made, but something I've known about myself my whole life. Through life's twists and turns, marriage, divorce, fatherhood, successes, failures - I've landed on this day, a day when I'm happier and healthier than I’ve ever been. And I’m finally comfortable enough for everyone to know this truth about me. Thanks for following me and supporting me over the years. As we continue our journey, I hope this news won't change how you see me. I’m still the same Cody I always was. You just know a little more about me now. My hope for the future is to live the most honest, authentic, loving, and open life possible. Here's to being happy with yourself, no matter who you are, who you love, where you come from, or what cards life has dealt you. Thanks again. With much heart, Cody
