On Thursday (September 16), the racing community was rocked to its core when news broke that former NASCAR driver Robby Gordon's father, Robert "Baja Bob" Gordon, and stepmother, Sharon, had been found dead in their own home in California. Robby's father had been a racer in the off-road racing community, and had a great influence on his son's career as well as other racers'.
The couples' bodies were discovered on Wednesday night (September 16) when Robert's best friend came to check on them. Police arrived on the scene and recovered a rifle, but did not discover any drugs in the home. From the start, investigators expressed suspicions that the deaths were a result of a murder-suicide, but said they were looking at other possibilities.
Robby delivered a statement later on Thursday concerning his parents' deaths, saying he believed he knew what had happened to them. But he didn't reveal his suspicions at that time, saying, "The truth will come out."
Now that the autopsies have been completed, police have officially released what they believe to be the cause of Robert and Sharon's deaths.
The Orange County Register reports that the autopsy results showed that Robert died after sustaining injuries that are consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. As for Sharon, police said the autopsy results show that she died from strangulation.
Lt. Fred Lopez said that police are still trying to determine a motive in the case. "We’ll eventually come to (an official) conclusion," he said. "But we may never really know why."
"This is very tough," Robby said during his emotional statement concerning his parents' death. He spoke of his father's influence in the racing community, and how he was admired by so many. "He taught so many, and I want everyone to know what a good man he was."

Our hearts break for Robby and the entire racing community. We'll continue to keep the Gordon family in our thoughts and prayers.
