Aspiring country music artist and actress Jamie Lynn Spears has been the center of prayers as fans learned of a horrifying accident that had left the star's daughter in "critical but stable" condition. 8-year-old Maddie was rushed to the hospital after reports of an ATV accident occurred, submerging the child under water for minutes until she was rescued unconscious.
PEOPLE was given a statement by Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards, revealing the frightening event and bringing clarification to the speculation and reports that a rep for Spears deemed "incorrect".
Shortly before 3:00 PM on Sunday afternoon, Maddie was said to have been handling an ATV on the family's property, in visual sight of Spears and her husband Jamie Watson. This is contrary to prior reports that stated the singer was absent during the accident, which was formerly said to have occurred during a hunting trip.
According to Edwards' statement to People, Maddie was headed for a drainage ditch, in which "she overcorrected [her steering] causing the ATV to enter the pond.” He continued, “The ATV and child were instantly submerged in the water right before their eyes.”
The family darted for the pond in efforts to save the little girl, although their efforts were to no avail as the child was securely strapped in the submerged vehicle from both the seat belt and vehicle's netting, unable to vacate. Within minutes, an ambulance and medics had arrived, successfully freeing the child from the chilled waters. Maddie continues to be in stable, yet critical, condition.
Finally, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office addressed the heartbreaking tragedy and desperately asked for the Spears family to be left in peace as they pull through this trying time.
Please continue to keep Maddie in your prayers.
