Before melting the nation’s heart with “Die a Happy Man,” a 19-year old Thomas Rhett joined his famous father Rhett Atkins onstage for a down home duet of “Kiss My Country Ass” at the Hard Rock Cafe in Nashville.

“I’m gonna get my boy up here to sing some of this song,” Akins says to summon his son up onstage. In a typical fatherly fashion, Akins goes on to tell his “most embarrassing story” he has about his son while Rhett sets himself up onstage.

“Me and my friend were at the bar and these five cute little girls were over there whispering,” Akins recalls. He went on to say he assumed they were going to come over wanting a picture with him seeing as he is a famous country singer. The girls eventually walked up to Akins and said, “Oh my God! Oh my God! You’re Thomas Rhett’s dad!”

“And then I get about six text messages from my friends saying ‘Hey! We’re hanging out with your dad at a bar!'” laughs Rhett.

The father-son duo then dive into their rocking duet to Akins’ country smash hit “Kiss My Country Ass,” with Rhett showing strong promise as a performer even as a teenager. Akins regards his son’s talent as “even better singer than I am” and speaks highly of his guitar playing.
