A Timeless American Tradition

The annual Army–Navy game, one of the most historic rivalries in sports, has been a longstanding tradition in the United States.

The rivalry began in November 1890, when the U.S. Military Academy at West Point competed against the U.S. Naval Academy in the first official matchup. Navy won that first game, setting the stage for what would become a defining annual event in college football.

By the early 1900s, the game grew into a national spectacle. Its popularity was so significant that President Theodore Roosevelt intervened in 1905 after concerns about violence and player safety threatened the future of football.

The competition is full of tradition, including the “March-On of the Corps,” when cadets and midshipmen enter the stadium in full uniform, and the postgame singing of alma maters.

This year’s game between the Navy Midshipmen and the Army Black Knights took place December 13 at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland.

Prior to the kickoff of this year’s Army–Navy game Saturday (December 13), fans were treated to a powerful rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” that captured national attention.

The performance drew widespread praise on social media and throughout the college football world. One of the defining moments of the game came before kickoff, when President Donald Trump appeared on the field, drawing a strong reaction from the crowd.

“Best National anthem of the season= Army vs Navy,” one fan wrote.

“The Army-Navy Game national anthem never gets old,” another commented.

Trump was also on the field for the ceremonial coin toss, and shook hands with some of the team captains before the game began.

Before the start of the big showdown, Trump shared his thoughts on the matchup in a Truth Social post.

“Getting ready to land at Fort McHenry for my short drive to the Army-Navy Game,” he said. “Everyone is asking who am I supporting, Army or Navy? My answer is: ‘You must be joking if you think I’m going to give you that answer!’ ”
