Unsuspecting 100-Year Old Becomes Celebrity After Hilarious Talk Show Appearance

NBC/Tonight Show

Dorothy Custer, best known as “Idaho’s Grandma,” knew better than anyone how to live life to the fullest. The Twin Falls, Idaho, native became a celebrity of sorts when she began celebrating her triple-digit birthdays in ways that would make people half her age cringe.

For her 101st birthday, the adorable grandma rode the zip line in the Snake River Canyon. Her 102nd birthday was celebrated with a tandem BASE jump that earned her the title of World’s Oldest BASE Jumper. For birthday number 103, Dorothy rode in a hot air balloon over Park City, Utah.

But, it was Custer’s appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno just three weeks after her 100th birthday that endeared her to millions around the globe.

The spunky granny kept host Jay Leno in stitches with her quick wit and hilarious sense of humor as she shared her secret to a long life and gave her opinions on modern technology and the government.

Before her appearance on The Tonight Show concluded, the centenarian showed off her harmonica skills with a rousing performance of “Turkey in the Straw.”

Custer passed away in April 2014, just one month shy of her 104th birthday.
