In 1987, three legendary artists teamed up to create an unforgettable album, called Trio. They were Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, and Linda Ronstadt, each major superstars in their own right, with over 200 million worldwide album sales between them.
Trio included hit songs such as "Wildflowers" and "To Know Him Is to Love Him," and the album itself snagged the top spot on the Billboard country albums chart. Due to Trio's success, the group that became known as "the female country holy trinity" released a second album in 1999, called Trio II, which was also a hit on the charts.
Together, the Trio albums have won three Grammys and have sold more than five million copies around the world. Since Trio is so beloved by country fans, there were hopes that the three artists would team up for another album. But when Ronstadt was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 2012, it left her unable to sing ever again.
However, Parton announced on Monday (Mar. 14) that the there will be a new Trio album after all, at least, in a sense. Parton announced the release of a newly remastered, three-CD set called The Complete Trio Collection. The set will contain all of the songs fans know and love, but will also feature rare and unreleased music never heard before.
According to a press release, the collection will be released on September 9, 2016. That same day, there will also be a single CD released called My Dear Companion: Selections From the Trio Collection, which will include songs from the larger CD set. A double LP with all of the bonus material from the three CD set will also be released on the same day.
Finally, Trio fans will get the chance to listen to some new music from these three talented artists! While you wait for the release of the new Trio collection, tune in below to watch their live performance of the hit single "To Know Him Is to Love Him," from the first Trio album.
