Scotty McCreery may only be 22 years old, but he's already lived an eventful life.
At the age of 17, McCreery won the 10th season of American Idol, and started his career in country music. Since winning Idol, he has released three studio albums and multiple hit songs, including "The Trouble with Girls" and "See You Tonight."
In looking back on his life so far, McCreery decided he wanted to give fans a personal look into what he has experienced, and chose to do so through a book. He ended up writing what he calls a "travelogue," rather than an autobiography, of his life experiences called Go Big or Go Home: Journey Toward the Dream.
"The timing felt right," McCreery told Black Hills to Go. "I have enough stories that could fill the pages hopefully could inspire some folks out there."
Although there are plenty of fun stories in his new book about his time on Idol, he also shared one story that isn't as fun for him to remember. Back in 2014, one normal night turned into a nightmare for McCreery, who found himself staring death in the face:
"It was Cinco de Mayo 2014, and my friends and I were up watching 'Gladiator,' We heard a knock at the door and thought it was a neighbor, and it was four masked gunmen who came in with pistols and assault rifles, took our wallets and computers. Not a fun night."
Luckily, no one was harmed, but they were all shaken up by the incident. For McCreery, the whole ordeal taught him an important lesson, one he wants to share with his fans as well.
"If something had gone wrong, that could have been it," McCreery said. "It helps you not take one day granted and get the most out of every day."
We can't imagine how frightening that must have been! We're glad McCreery was able to take his scary experience and learn from it, and that he's sharing that lesson with his fans.
McCreery's book, Go Big or Go Home: Journey Toward the Dream is set to hit the shelves on May 3, but until then, enjoy watching him perform "See You Tonight" in the video below.
