When Haggard was just 20 years old, he was arrested for trying to rob a Bakersfield, California roadhouse and later transferred to San Quentin Prison where he began to play with the prison's country music band and was inspired by a performance (shown above) from Johnny Cash in 1958. 

Of the experience, Haggard says, "I wanted to better myself, but I took off in the wrong direction. When I woke up in San Quentin, I was about 21, and I realized how far I'd gone in the wrong direction.
