In 1945, Merle’s father passed from a brain hemorrhage and that was a hard time for the future singer. He was only 9 years old at the time.
In an interview with Men’s Journal, Haggard admits that the best advice he’d picked up came from his father.
“My father hated a liar. He died when I was nine, but if I learned anything from him, I learned that.”
