Unspeakable Country Music Tragedies (1/8)

1. Willie Nelson’s Eldest Son Found Dead

According to a 1992 People Magazine article, Willie Nelson told a friend, “I’ve never experienced anything so devastating in my life.”

The longtime country singer’s 33-year-old son, Billy Nelson, was found on Christmas morning in 1991 at his home in Tennessee in what was later ruled a suicide by hanging.

The country star had just recently began a difficult battle with the IRS before the tragic loss of his son.

Just a few months before his death, Willie and Billy had recorded a gospel song written by Billy called “My Body’s Just A Suitcase For My Soul”. His son had been planning on releasing an album of his own. Willie’s recordings of the songs his son wrote were released on an album in 2015.
