When country fans heard that Dolly Parton's beloved television movie, Coat of Many Colors, is getting a sequel just in time for Christmas, they couldn't contain their excitement. After the first film drew in nearly 16 million viewers, it quickly became clear that people wanted to learn more about Parton's childhood in rural Tennessee.
The original film is based on Parton's hit song of the same name, which tells the story of a coat her mama, Avie Lee, made for her out of a bunch of rags. While the sequel isn't based on the song itself, it still tells a story about the Parton family that is filled with heartwarming moments.
Called Dolly Parton's Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love, the sequel is set to feature the original cast, including Jennifer Nettles as Parton's mother and Alyvia Alyn Lind as a young Parton. During an interview with Rolling Stone, Parton dished out some new details about the sequel, revealing it is based on some actual events that happened to her family when she was young.
"This one is a Christmas movie and is about the time that mama didn't have a wedding ring and we all saved up money to buy mama a ring for Christmas. And it's about a blizzard that about done us in on the mountain years ago."
As for why the first film was so successful, Parton feels it has to do with the fact that there really isn't anything like it on television anymore.
"A lot of people relate to it and then I think also people are missing faith-based, family-oriented shows on television, like 'The Waltons' and 'Little House on the Prairie,'" she said.
Since Parton is in multi-movie deal with NBC, she is planning another film or possibly even a television series around her faith-filled song, "The Seeker." A film based on her hit song "Jolene" is also in the works, and Parton says the script for that film was recently approved.
Besides working on her films, Parton has a new album coming out in June, is going on her first tour in 25 years, and is planning her 50th anniversary celebration with her husband, Carl Dean. With everything on her plate this year, it seems like the Coat of Many Colors sequel will be the perfect conclusion to Parton's 2016!
