Blake Shelton & Ashley Monroe’s ‘Lonely Tonight’ Will Make You Relive Your Worst Heartbreak

Pistol Annies band member Ashley Monroe teamed up with fellow country artist, Blake Shelton, for a heartbreaking duet of “Lonely Tonight.” The relatable tune tells the story of two people longing for a past love when loneliness creeps in at night. The couple breaks down time and time again, running back into the arms of their ex even though they know it’s not right.

“Lonely Tonight” was featured on Shelton’s eighth studio album Bringing Back the Sunshine in 2014. The 2014 hit peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart in late November 2014. It was Monroe’s first solo No. 1 hit as well. Monroe started off her career being a solo artist singing and songwriting in early 2006. In 2011, the trio girl band, Pistol Annies was formed by Monroe, Miranda Lambert, and Angaleena Presley. After years together, the girls produced girl power hits and revamped themselves in 2018.

The heartbreaking music video for “Lonely Tonight” depicts Monroe in a car on her way to Shelton’s hotel, succumbing to the loneliness of the night. As Shelton sings through the night, Monroe joins with her gentle vocals for the perfect harmony. As the singers got back in forth between verses, the wind up together in the end.

The video ends with the two back in each other’s arms for a bittersweet “one last time.”

“When the sun comes up, we can both move on,” they sing together. “But we don’t have to be lonely tonight.”
