Rare Recording Of George Strait’s First Ever Single Before He Was Famous

Texas Monthly

Over 40 years ago a young George Strait recorded this old style country ballad. “I Just Can’t Go On Dying Like This” is featured on his critically acclaimed ninth studio album, Strait Out of the Box, alongside some of his greatest hit.

The song tells the story of a man feeling as if he’s being taken advantage by his significant other but just cannot seem to get himself to cut ties with her. The narrator isn’t sure what exactly isn’t right in the relationship but knows for certain that he “just can’t go on dying like this.”

How many times will it take till I’m convinced/ That you’re using me,” sings the King. “I’m just a used-to-be/ It’s a lie, I know it’s a lie/ But I just can’t go on dying like this.”

I Just Can’t Go On Dying Like This” was written and recorded by Strait in June 1976 in his home state of Texas. While the song didn’t receive much attention during its original release, the highly relatable melancholy lyrics have achieved it a status of timelessness.

You can listen to the powerful country ballad on its oringal 45.
