“The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia” was originally recorded and released by Vicki Lawrence in 1973. Reba McEntire later covered the song and released it on her 1992 For My Broken Heart album. It reached #12 on the US Hot Country Songs (Billboard) chart.
The song tells the story of a man falsely convicted for a murder and is told through his sister’s point of view. The man’s best friend, Andy, confessed that while he was away from town, his wife had been cheating on him with another man and he, himself, also slept with her. The narrator’s brother leaves the bar, goes home and gets his gun, and walks to Andy’s house, but he ends up finding Andy already dead. Andy shoots his gun to flag down the sheriff, but the officer immediately accuses him of murder. The judge pronounces him guilty and the brother is hanged. There’s a plot twist though – it was the sister that killed Andy, as well as the cheating wife!
Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles poured her heart out in a stunning rendition of Reba’s hit song at the CMT Giants: Reba special. She received a standing ovation and an appreciative embrace from Reba post-performance. What a wonderful way to pay tribute to such an iconic country star!
