“Crazy” was originally written for Cline by fellow country music artist Willie Nelson. The song was first released in October 1961 and was a #2 country hit in 1962. Nelson released his own version of the song in 1962 on his album …And Then I Wrote.
Rimes performed her rendition of the classic country hit on an episode of Donny & Marie in December of 1999, surrounded by holiday decorations and Christmas lights.
Cline served as a huge inspiration to Rimes, whose 1999 self-titled album contains five covers of Cline’s hit songs. Since Cline had such an impact on her life, LeAnn covered her songs to pay tribute to her.
Rimes’ performance on Donny & Marie isn’t the only time she has taken to the stage to honor Cline. For the ACA Awards in 2013 Rimes sang a medley of Cline’s most popular songs, a performance which earned her praise from fans and other artists alike.
Country superstar Trace Adkins had this to say after Rime’s ACA performance:
“I just want to say it takes one great singer to take a Patsy Cline song and LeAnn Rimes just reminded us she is one great singer. I take my hat off to her.”
Rimes makes her talent clear in her Donny & Marie performance as well, holding out multiple long notes with absolute ease. Her performance also contains just the right amount of country twang, not so much that it overwhelms her vocals, but just enough that it gives her rendition a classic country vibe.
At the end of the song Rimes belts out a high note, then quickly drops her voice back down to a near whisper as she gazes adoringly at the crowd. Donny and Marie immediately rush the stage after her performance, with Donny praising Rimes by calling her rendition “beautiful.”
Patsy Cline left this world far too soon, but her amazing legacy continues to live on in the voices of talented singers like Rimes.
