When Kenny Rogers first decided to start recording a new Christmas album, he thought that he would only record original songs. But as it turns out, there’s only one original song on Rogers’ album, Once Again It’s Christmas, with the rest of the tracks being classic Christmas favorites.

One song that Rogers decided to cover is a personal favorite of his, called “There’s A New Kid In Town.” The song was actually co-written by Keith Whitley, along with Don Cook and Curly Putman. Rogers heard the song for the first time when Whitley performed it while opening for him during a Christmas tour.

In a recent interview, Rogers says that while he was working on his new Christmas album, he remembered how Whitley used to sing “There’s A New Kid In Town” when they were on tour.

He had this magic, wonderful voice,” Rogers says. “When I started putting this album together, I remembered the moment I heard him sing this.”

Rogers’ rendition of the song also features the sister duo Winfield’s Locket, who provide the harmonies for the track.

They really added that special touch that you don’t get anywhere else,” Rogers says.

Overall, Rogers is excited about his new Christmas album and all of the songs included on it, especially “There’s A New Kid In Town.”

It’s a wonderful song, and I’m thrilled to have that memory of hearing Keith Whitley do it,” he says.

You can watch Rogers’ full interview in the video below, and while you’re at it, enjoy listening to both Whitley and Rogers’ versions of the song.

We think Whitley would be extremely touched by Rogers’ cover of his iconic Christmas song.
