Rory Feek had prepared himself for the possibility that he would be celebrating Christmas without Joey this year. In October, when Joey was given her terminal cancer diagnosis, they weren’t sure that she would live to see Christmas. In a new blog post, Rory confessed that the family took a ‘Gruffalo’ approach to Christmas this year.

The Gruffalo is an award-winning children’s book that tells the tale of a skittish mouse who dreams up a monstrous beast as a way to scare off potential predators. While the mouse knows that the best is fictional, everyone else believes his story. The book concludes with the mouse realizing that the very thing he had imaged was, in fact, real. The knowledge gave the mouse courage to fight through situations that would have otherwise been scary.

Rory writes that like the mouse in The Gruffalo, “we all began to ‘make up’ our own Gruffalo.  Ours was the belief that it was going to be a wonderful, magical Christmas.  We didn’t really believe it – down deep inside we knew we knew better – but still we told ourselves and each other that it was going to be great.”

They found that their very own Gruffalo was real too! “Christmas had come and Joey was not only here with us, but she was doing well and we all had an amazing day together.”

The family enjoyed their favorite Christmas traditions including cookies they made together, Christmas Eve pajamas, a family dinner, and lots of presents.

“And so as the New Year approaches, we will continue to believe and trust that what is waiting on the other side of the deep, dark wood is something even better and more beautiful than our minds can even imagine,” Rory wrote. “And yes, our little Indiana had a wonderful Christmas this year.  I think her favorite gift was getting her very own Gruffalo.  Her expressions were priceless. Like us, she almost couldn’t believe that her ‘Gruffalo’ was really here.  Really real.

But it was.  It really was.”

On Christmas Eve, Rory shared a touching video to Facebook that showed Indiana playing at the park with her big sisters. The video is set to a song written by Georgia Claire Varble called “I Still Believe In You.” Enjoy the video below!
