Craig Strickland’s body was recovered almost a week after that of his friend at Oklahoma’s Lake Kaw. On December 27, Strickland, 29, and Chase Morland ventured out in a winter storm for a duck hunt and were reported missing by their families after the men didn’t make contact for 24 hours.
Morland, 22, was found on Monday (Dec. 28) along with the capsized boat roughly 2 to 3 miles from where the men launched their boat early Sunday morning. The search for Strickland turned to a recovery effort that was mainly focused to the water with teams using boats equipped with sonar, a helicopter, and cadaver dogs.
However, this morning (Jan. 4), “search crews changed their strategy to focus on a debris field around the water and on land,” according to 40/29 News. Strickland was found around 11:30 a.m. CST, just hours after today’s search began. Strickland’s wife, Helen, detailed the discovery with an emotional Instagram post.
Craig was found today. We can finally rest knowing that he is at Home in Heaven with his Father. The night of the accident he had fought his way out of the water and up a hill before the stages of hypothermia set in. He experienced no pain in his final moments and simply felt like he was falling asleep. They found him lying in the shape of a cross looking up to his Father. Thank you to every single person who prayed for him and our family during this time. There was not a more peaceful way for him to go into the arms of our Lord, and I know your prayers had a role in making that happen. I know he saw Jesus at that moment when he laid down and walked arm in arm with Him into a better Everlasting Life. I love you with all my heart Craig Michael. #craigstrickland
