Rory Feek/This Life I Live
This next week is a big one for Joey + Rory, with the Grammy Awards and daughter Indy’s second birthday to look forward to. But before those two events is Valentine’s Day, and Rory has a special plan in mind for how to spend it with his bride.
On his blog, Rory writes that him and Joey spent their first Valentine’s Day together in 2002, when Joey invited him to come to a get-together for the vet clinic she worked at. Two months later, Joey + Rory were engaged, and two months after that they were married.
Now, on their 14th Valentine’s Day together, Rory is trying to plan something special for Joey, even though they can’t celebrate the way they used to.
“What I really want to do on this, our 14th Valentines together, is share a romantic candle-lit dinner with my bride: grill out rib-eyes on the campfire back home, pour two glasses of red wine and sit across from her at our kitchen table – just like we’ve done on more than one special occasion,” he wrote. “But those things aren’t able to happen this year.“
Rory reveals that at this point, Joey really can’t eat much at all, and that she spends most of her time sleeping. Also, the Feeks haven’t seen their farmhouse in Tennessee since October, so Rory knows this Valentine’s Day will have to be a little different than those past.
Although Joey + Rory aren’t able to celebrate Valentine’s Day like they have before, Rory still has some romantic plans in mind for their day:
“So my hope this year instead is to hold her hand and take her on a ‘virtual’ walk down memory lane together…with pictures and videos on my laptop. I want to take her back to where our lives first began together, and relive this beautiful journey that God has taken us on…from that first song she heard me sing at the Bluebird cafe, to the last one we sang together as we stood on stage and took our final bow…to the songs that she will leave behind here on earth and the ones she will soon sing for eternity to our sweet Lord in that heavenly choir up yonder.”
After Rory takes Joey on her special trip down memory lane, he only hopes for one more thing this Valentine’s Day.
“I’m hoping for a few soft kisses,” he writes. “The passion for each other that Joey and I once had has been replaced by the sweetest, gentlest kisses. I live for those kisses. They are enough.“
In 2013, Joey + Rory released a song called “Long Line of Love,” in which they sing about the power of love and how it continues through the generations. With Joey + Rory, it’s clear they also come from a “long line of love.”
We continue to send our prayers out to this incredible couple.
