When Grammy award nominations were announced in December, Joey and Rory Feek were shocked to see their names on the list. The duo received their first ever Grammy nomination in the Best Country Duo/Group Performance category for their stunning rendition of Townes Van Zandt’s “If I Needed You.” Even though Joey is in the final stages of a courageous cancer battle and hadn’t expected to live past Thanksgiving, she let it be known that she wanted to live to see the Grammy awards (February 15) and her daughter’s second birthday (February 17).
One of Joey’s wishes has come true. Tonight is the 58th annual Grammy awards and Joey is here to see it. While the couple didn’t win their category (winners were announced earlier this evening), the nomination was an honor that they never saw coming…an honor that gave Joey yet another reason to continue fighting her cancer battle.
Joey and Rory didn’t attend the award ceremony, but were represented by Rory’s adult daughters and the couple’s manager, Aaron Carnahan. In a recent blog post, Rory shared that Joey wanted him to attend the award show and even purchased him a plane ticket that he later returned.
“I can’t leave her. I won’t. I have done many foolish things and made lots of mistakes in my life, but this isn’t going to be one of them. Instead, I will be sitting beside her and cheering on Little Big Town, and Blake Shelton and Charles and all the talented folks who are nominated in our category and others. It’s an honor for us to just be a part of that night, it truly is.”
Earlier today, Rory shared a photo of the couple’s almost-2-year old daughter, Indy, getting ready for the big night.
“…Indy getting her hair done by her Aunts for Grammy watching w her mama and papa tonight (if it’s not past her bedtime).”
The Grammy trophy may not have been handed to Joey+Rory tonight, but we think that they would agree that they’ve won in a different way as God answered Joey’s prayer to live to see the Grammy awards show.
