Travis Tritt took to Twitter the day after the CMA Awards to blast the CMAs for inviting non-country performer Beyonce to sing at the country music awards show. In a string of tweets that followed, Tritt made it clear that he didn't think there was any place for Beyonce at a country music event.

"Thanks to everyone who came out to see us in Bowling Green, KY tonight. Sorry we weren't able to do any Beyoncé for all the country fans," he wrote. "FYI - My band and I are gonna try to work up Beyoncé's 'All The Single Ladies' for all you die hard country fans who love traditional music!"

The tirade infuriated fans of the R&B star who accused Tritt of being racist and lashed out at the singer saying, "Pathetic, petty, narrow minded reeks of racism...You should be ashamed."

Tritt responded by clarifying by saying he was only criticizing the Country Music Association for trying to boost ratings by enlisting a star from another music genre.

"As I see it, country music has appealed to millions for many years," he tweeted. "We can stand on our own and don't need pop artists on our awards shows. I love honest to God country music and feel the need to stand up for it at all costs. We don't need pop or rap artists to validate us."

Beyonce was joined by the Dixie Chicks during Wednesday night's 50th anniversary show igniting backlash unlike anything country music has seen in decades. The drama surrounding the performance was addressed by Dixie Chicks' lead singer Natalie Maines who tweeted, lyrics from Beyoncé's "Formation," throwing subtle shade at the haters. "You know you dat *itch when you cause all this conversation. Always stay gracious best revenge is your paper."
