Following the unveiling this year’s nominees for the iHeart Radio Music Awards “Country Artist of the Year,” many noticed one trait they all had in common, all nominees are male.

Bringing the matter to social media, country music artist Cam took to Twitter to start a discussion on the issue of “gender bias” in country radio through series of sharp tweets.

“The majority of country listeners are female (actually true) but apparently we prefer listening [to] male singers so we can ‘dream about them being [our] boyfriend’ (actually said to me),” she tweeted. “Sure hope #iHeartAwards picks the hottest one, cause that’s all my lady-brain can understand!” Cam wrote to kick of her discussion.

The Grammy-nominated country artist’s tweet comes at a time when only one solo female artist is charting in one of the Top 30 slots on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart. The country singer continued her conversation regarding the gender problem in country radio in the replys of her original tweet after a few followers fired back.

In response to Cam’s tweet, Twitter user Marcy_RanFan replied, “Sad but true. They actually relate the songs and artist to their fantasy lovers especially single, lonely and cheated on females.”

After reading the reply, a confused Cam asked, “Wait who is the they? Sorry, are you saying single or cheated on people are all dumb, broken and desperate? Or just the female ones…?”

The Twitter user fired back at Cam’s reply, asking where she came up with the word “dumb,” stating no one used that term but her.

“Yes, i used that word bc only a dumb person buys music solely based on their sex drive. That’s not the majority of listeners and isn’t driving sales. I’m saying female consumers are being underestimated / incorrectly blamed for the lack of female artists,” Cam clarified of her previous reply.

So what does Cam think is the first step in fixing the problem? In one of her final tweets on the matter, the country singer urged a need to “educate the gatekeepers about the false biases they have.”

This year’s nominees for “Country Artist of the Year” at the 2018 iHeart Radio Awards include Thomas Rhett, Blake Shelton, Sam Hunt, Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean.
