Speaking candidly with NBC Sports, Patrick reveals her view on getting back in a car for the Cup Series - and exactly what that would take for her. Not long after her split with Stewart-Haas Racing, she was rumored to be eyeing a return to IndyCar, but quickly shut those rumors down - but said she was "open-minded."
Now, Patrick is coming up to the end of what could be her final season as a NASCAR Cup Series racer and is looking ahead with great prospects - but there is only one way that she says she will stay.
"With anything in life, you can't force things to happen," Patrick admitted. "It's obviously figuring out what to do next and how it looks. If I'm going to race for another team, if I'm gonna keep going...If I'm not gonna keep going. All that stuff is getting figured out now."
The one caveat she holds for continuing in the premier Cup Series, is that she will not continue unless she has a competitive ride - that means she's not just going to accept any team opening that comes up.
“So I’m just in a ‘go with the flow’ mode. What comes will come. And it’s going to be great. It’s going to all be wonderful. All I know is I keep in mind all the things I want for my life, and everything will fit in according to that.”
Patrick made it clear that she and her business team are making moves to find a new ride for 2018, but she's going to be selective with it. On top of that, she's not opposed to an option for IndyCar, but that isn't her immediate goal.
