In the 1969 version of the movie True Grit, Western film star John Wayne leads the cast in the role of U.S. Marshal Roster Cogburn. The film earned a tie to country music when country singer Glen Campbell was cast as Cogburn's partner, a Texas Ranger named La Boeuf.
True Grit came to be known as one of Wayne's greatest works. In fact, it's the only role he ever won an Academy Award for. He later reprised that role in a 1975 sequel, which was appropriately titled Rooster Cogburn.
A new adaptation to the True Grit story was released in 2010, with Jeff Bridges taking on the role of Rooster Cogburn. Like its predecessor, this film was successful and was the subject of great critical acclaim.
