The 42-year-old racing veteran and former NASCAR competitor tragically passed away from injuries sustained during a crash on Saturday evening (March 25th).
The racing world and many fellow NASCAR drivers were left in shock after the passing of one of their own during what can only be described as a devastating and tragic accident.
Sprint car star and well-known racing veteran David Steele was killed in an on-track crash this weekend at Desoto Speedway in Bradenton, Florida.
Steele was known in the racing community for his incredible talent behind the wheel and his long list of achievements - which includes winning the U.S. Auto Club Silver Crown Series in both 2004 and 2005, and more recently, taking home a record 100th win event in Florida. Steele had previously competed in other racing series that included three IndyCar Series races, two NASCAR Busch Series races, and several ARCA races amongst others.
During the race on Saturday, Steele was involved in a crash where his left front tire clipped the rear of the car in front of him and caused him to lose control - going airborne into a spin that landed him hard into the outside wall on the driver's side. Local law enforcement said that paramedics attempted to revive Steele, but he was pronounced dead.
Fellow NASCAR drivers and racing teams offered their condolences on social media following the tragic news.
Our prayers go out to the family of Dave Steele. Our former teammate, he was one of the best open-wheel drivers of this era. Godspeed - TSR— Tony Stewart Racing (@TonyStewart_Rcg) March 26, 2017
Man, I love open wheel racing, but something has to change. RIP Dave Steele. One of the best pavement sprint car and midget guys ever.— Alex Bowman (@AlexBRacing) March 26, 2017
Totally agree. One of the best and such a good guy to hang out and have a beer with. Praying for his family 🙏🏻 https://t.co/2pQFRSyk7Q— Kasey Kahne (@kaseykahne) March 26, 2017
