Although Robby Gordon is a former NASCAR driver, he first got his start in off-road racing. His father, Robert "Baja Bob" Gordon was an off-road racer as well, so he simply followed in the tracks he set before him.
But now, Robby is mourning the loss of the man who led him into the racing world, after Robert was found dead in his California home.
Fox Sports reports that the body of Robby's stepmother, Sharon, was also found in the home. The police stated that they received a 911 call around 5 PM on Wednesday (September 14) to report the discovery of the two bodies. According to KTLA 5, a neighbor was the one who discovered the bodies after they entered the home to check on the couple per a family member's request.
Kelly Keyes, the Orange County Supervising Deputy Coroner told USA Today that the cause of Robert and Sharon's deaths "had not been ruled one way or another." She revealed that the autopsies were scheduled to take place on Thursday (September 15).
While they do not know what caused Robert and Sharon's deaths yet, detectives told CBS Los Angeles it appears to have been a murder-suicide. They also reported that they had recovered a weapon during the search of the home.
As of press time, Robby has not released a statement about his father and stepmother's deaths.
Over the course of his career, Robby made 396 NASCAR Premier Series starts, and won two races in the old Champ Car Series. He has since left NASCAR, and is now an owner-driver in the Stadium Super Trucks Series. He had been scheduled to run in Costa Mesa, California over the weekend, but considering recent events, that could change.
Our heartfelt prayers go out to Robby and his family during this sad time.
