Kenny Rogers shocked everyone on September 25, 2015 when he announced his plans to retire after decades of performing. Although it was a tough decision for Rogers to make, he knew it was the best one, since he is 78 years old and performing isn’t as easy for him as it used to be.
Back when Rogers announced his retirement plans, he revealed he would go on one final tour before he called it quits. Fans have been enjoying his farewell tour so far, but many want to know if there is anything they can do to make Rogers change his mind about retiring.
Beth Cooney Fitzpatrick of the Westport Weston & Wilton asked Rogers what all fans have been wondering…will he change his mind and continue performing?
Fitzpatrick asked Rogers what it would take to keep him from retiring. He replied that his fans are the only thing that would make him consider staying in the game for the long haul:
“If anyone could convince me otherwise, it would be the fans, but I can say this is definitely the last go around. It’s just time. It won’t be easy leaving behind something I’ve done for nearly sixty years of my life, but I need to spend more time with my family and do some of the things we have on our bucket list to do together. As much as I love entertaining, family is the most important thing to me.”
Throughout his career, Rogers became known well through his duets with other great singers such as Dolly Parton. He revealed that if he did record any more music, there’s one artist he knows he’d love to work with.
“One that comes to mind quickly is Bonnie Raitt,” he said. “I just think she’s fantastic; her voice, her songwriting and, of course, her guitar playing. I think we could do something really special together.“
We would love to hear a duet between Rogers and Raitt! Although we’re sad to hear that he hasn’t changed his mind about retiring, we can’t blame him for wanting to spend more time with his family.
Rogers has left us with great musical legacy already, so any new material would just be a lovely bonus. Enjoy his duet with Parton on “Islands in the Stream” in the clip below.
