One of the best-known men in NASCAR sat and watched everything he'd worked for over the last 36 years of his life get auctioned off in a bankruptcy proceeding to pay for medical bills after being faced with repeated serious medical issues.
Sam Bass, the very first licensed NASCAR artist who designed many car paint schemes, racing illustrations, stock car hoods, and custom guitars, first faced challenges with his health after being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes almost 20 years ago. In 2008, he lost the lower portion of his left leg and just six years later, Bass suffered a blood infection that caused septic shock and took four rapid surgeries to save his life.
At the beginning of April this year, Bass revealed to the public that he is in desperate need of a kidney transplant and is currently undergoing dialysis - both of which are a direct result of his lifelong diabetes battle.
Many drivers and industry leaders from NASCAR have graciously stepped up to help out the man that has impacted so many people's lives. They created a special GoFundMe account in his name and have reached out to their large social media following in hopes that more people could give Bass a helping hand.
Earlier today, May 3rd 2017, a U.S. Bankruptcy Court held an auction of almost every valuable piece of art that Bass owns in an effort to liquidate his assets to pay the mounting medical bills.
Throughout watching his 36 years of hard work get sold to the highest bidder, the longtime artist was understandably emotional.
"Heartbreaking to watch 36 [years] of your life go on the auction block today, due to medical bills," Bass tweeted out. "I thank everyone for their love & support!"

The auction was held as an in-person event earlier today and a second, online auction will be held on Sunday (May 7th). More than 300 pieces of Bass' art are for sale during the auctions, including 85 custom guitars and various car hoods and autographed vehicle parts.
Our hearts and prayers go out to Sam Bass during this time and many of his fans and drivers have been praying for him, too.
