Although Dolly Parton is now one of country music’s biggest stars, she’s never lost sight of where she came from. As a child, Parton grew up in a tiny cabin near the Smokey Mountains in Tennessee. One of 12 children, she once told CNN that her family was “dirt poor.”
Parton’s childhood helped inspire one of her most iconic songs, titled “Coat of Many Colors.” The song tells the story of a colorful coat Parton’s mother made for her out of scraps, and how it made her feel “rich” to wear it.
In 2015, Parton’s beloved song served as the background for the movie of the same name. Millions tuned in to watch Coat of Many Colors when it aired, and broke a television record in the process. A well-received sequel was released in 2016, called Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love.
