They had every reason to be thrilled, because Urban and Underwood always bring their A-game every time they perform together.
“The Fighter” was released on February 6, 2017 as the fifth single off of Urban’s album Ripcord. But the hype surrounding the song led to it charting for the first time months earlier, when it climbed as high as the 11th spot on the Hot Country Songs chart.
The music video matched the song’s success, and has millions of views. That video picked up a win at the CMT Music Awards.
It comes as no surprise that Urban and Underwood decided to perform “The Fighter” when the CMT Music Awards took place that year. They performed the song at other awards shows before, and viewers loved every minute.
Since they performed “The Fighter” a few times by then, Urban and Underwood decided to offer up an exciting spin on their performance for the CMT Music Awards. Urban hinted at this new twist in a press release issued before the ceremony.
“Carrie and I are working to create a different take on ‘The Fighter’ for the CMT Awards!!!!” Keith said. “Can’t wait!“
Finally, we learned what that surprise was when Urban and Underwood took to the stage at the CMT Music Awards. Instead of singing the song in its upbeat, normal tempo, the two turned it into a romantic ballad.
Standing on opposite sides of the stage, Urban and Underwood sang back and forth as the crowd listened in awe. Finally, the two came together at center stage and burst out into the fast-paced version of the song to bring it all to a stunning conclusion.
The crowd roared with applause once they finished, and we think the response was well-deserved!
Once again, Urban and Underwood amazed us all with “The Fighter!” Did you enjoy the new take on their performance? We’d love to hear your thoughts!
