On July 22, Kenny Chesney announced his plans to release a new single called “Setting the World on Fire.” He also had a surprise in store when he revealed that the new single was a collaboration with pop superstar P!nk. Country fans waited for the day the new tune would hit the radio, and it finally did on Thursday (July 28).
No one was quite sure what to expect from Kenny and P!nk’s collaboration, but regardless of what their exceptions were they were likely blown away when they heard their duet for the first time. The song is slower and more simplified than Kenny’s previous single “Noise,” which gives Kenny and P!nk the chance to showcase their individual talents.
Kenny takes on the song’s first verse, as he reflects back on fond memories with a flame from the past.”We were screamin’ cause all the streets were empty/And you kissed me, and we were…” he sings, before P!nk takes over on the chorus.
They switch off singing parts for most of the song, which continues to follow the story of two people who were once madly in love with one another. But in the few moments that Kenny and P!nk do bring their voices together, the sound is dazzling, making us wonder why they didn’t collaborate sooner.
Prior to the release of “Setting the World on Fire,” Chesney wrote a short description of the song, how it makes people feel, and what it was like working with P!nk:
“To me, great songs are great songs regardless of genre, and the core of being alive is the same no matter where you are. That rush of realizing there’s something going on here… You’re really clicking with someone… Or even just one of those perfect nights with your friends, there’s no feeling like it. And I like the idea of P!NK with her voice that is so strong and contains so many colors, she really makes that idea of giving into your heart, shouting out the window and whirling around in the middle of an abandoned street feel real.”
Apparently listeners agreed with Kenny’s words, because only one day after its release “Setting the World on Fire” had claimed the top spot on the all-genre chart on Apple Music. Kenny shared the news with his fans on Twitter, thanking them all for “loving the music.”
