Luke Bryan enlisted NBA superstar Jimmy Butler of the Minnesota Timberwolves to help him bring to life his latest single, “Light It Up.”

“Light It Up” analyzes a thoroughly modern communication problem found in 21st century dating, the song’s protagonist nearing their breaking point waiting on a phone call or text from someone they love after a huge fight.

Butler takes on the role of the narrator, the video beginning in the Timberwolves’ locker room before a big game, the athlete seen texting his significant other he’s sorry and didn’t mean what he said in the heat of the moment. Butler returns to the locker room after his team reigns victorious, checking his phone only to see a blank screen.

I wake up, I check it / I shower and I check it / I feel the buzz in my truck and I almost wreck it,” Bryan sings as a distraught Butler checks his phone obsessively throughout the video. On his commute homes, visions of his girlfriend flash through his head, the athlete unaware that she had broken her phone early in the night.

Unable to sleep, Butler goes and shoots some hoops in attempt to let off some steam. Upon his return home, Butler sees his girlfriend’s smashed phone on the kitchen table and finds her sleeping safe and sound in his bed.

Bryan wrote “Light It Up” with Old Dominion‘s Brad Tursi, the song released as the followup to his 18th Number One on country radio, “Fast.”
