A Song Miranda Kept Hidden

For many years, Miranda Lambert has been in love with the song “Scars.” But despite her love for the song, she never felt that she was capable of performing it, until finally that day came in 2016.

“Scars” was written by someone close to Lambert, her long-time guitarist Scotty Wray, who has worked with her since she was 17. As soon as Lambert heard the song for the first time, she instantly fell in love with it and its emotional message.

However, Lambert never felt that she wasn’t “damaged” enough to sing the song until she had lived through something that could make it seem real for her to sing it.

Finally Ready To Take It On

Finally, 15 years later, Lambert gathered up the courage to perform the song for the first time at her Roadside Bars and Pink Guitars Unplugged show at the City Winery in Nashville in January 2016.

I’ve cried every time he sang it,” Lambert said prior to the performance. “Tonight I’m going to try and sing it.”

After everything she went through during the prior year because of her divorce, Lambert said she finally felt “damaged” enough to be able to sing the song and make it seem true.

With lines such as “love was never meant to be that easy,” and “looking back I’m glad I took my chances, cause they were worth at least enough to make a mark,” it really seems like the song was written for Lambert’s life at the time.

It’s Emotional & Empowering

Although the song speaks about heartbreak, it also talks about how a person’s scars, both physical and emotional, can be an empowering thing. “I’ve lived enough to know not to hide them any more,” Lambert sang at one point.

During the performance, Wray sat behind Lambert on stage, playing guitar and singing background vocals. Before she started singing, Lambert hinted toward the possibility of recording “Scars” in the future, something that would surely make Wray proud.

The song didn’t appear on her album The Weight of These Wings, so be on the lookout on a future release.

Lambert says that when she told Wray she wanted to sing “Scars” at the show, he was thrilled, and said, “I’ve been waiting to hear you sing this a long time.”

We’re glad that Lambert finally decided to share “Scars” with us. You can watch her emotional performance in the video below.
