Randy Travis’s Wife Shares Emotional Breakthrough In His Stroke Recovery

Fox 4

Randy Travis will be the first one to tell you that he’s a living miracle. Nearly four years after being hospitalized for viral cardiomyopathy which eventually led to a near-fatal stroke, the Grammy Award winning singer is speaking out about his recovery and shares how baby steps are huge victories.

During a phone interview with CNN, Travis and his wife, Mary, share that they are rejoicing in even the smallest of victories.
“It’s little things that mean so much when you’re recovering from a stroke,” Mary said told CNN. “We never know when the end point is but we’re happy with every little change, every little sound, every little word, every new task.”
The couple celebrated a huge milestone recently while driving from Memphis to Nashville.
“We were coming out of Memphis and overhead was a sign, ‘Nashville’ and he was over in the passenger seat and went, ‘woo hoo’ and he pointed up and he said, ‘Nashville.'” she recalled. “I just sat over there in the driver’s seat and cried because I knew then that he read that sign, and he recognized the word, and then he said it. That’s a huge thing. Huge for us.”
In 2016, Randy was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. During his induction ceremony in October, Travis brought the audience to tears as he sang “Amazing Grace,” a song that has become his anthem.
“Going through this ordeal with his health, stroke and flatlining and making it back, when there was every opportunity in the world for God to take him home … we’ve truly lived the life of amazing grace,” she said.
Randy also told CNN that he hopes to record music again, but Mary shared that early in his recovery the country music legend couldn’t listen to his own songs. What are some of his own favorites? “Diggin’ Up Bones” and “He Walked On Water,” according to Mary.
Each day gets better and better for Randy Travis. And for the Travis’s there is no looking back…only looking forward.
