Just a few short weeks ago, the country superstar was asking for help when she discovered that one of her biggest fans had gone missing.
In a plea to her fans, Shania Twain took to social media begging people to come forward and help return 24-year-old Rachel Mattice to her family.
According to various news outlets, Twain first heard of Mattice’s disappearance when one of her friends sent the superstar a message on Instagram requesting her help and expressing how much the young woman adored Twain’s music.
As the story unfolded, it was learned that Mattice had departed from her parents house on June 22nd headed for the family’s campsite in a rural part of the Adirondack Mountains. Several days went by without word from their daughter, so her parents got the police involved.
Gone for a total of two weeks, massive search and rescue operations were conducted in the hopes of discovering the young woman.
On July 6th, Mattice reappeared at her parents’ home with a vivid account of a tortuous abduction by a man, who she claims, was between 50-70 years old with a long beard. This man, police believe, does not exist.
In fact, the New York State Police believe Mattice fabricated the entire story in an attempt to escape an investigation they have pending against her for the theft of medication from her workplace.
Mattice has been formally arrested and charged with a single misdemeanor count of falsely reporting an abduction.
While she turned herself over to authorities, Mattice has not wavered in her account of the abduction.
