It’s hard to believe that nearly six years have passed since Scotty McCreery was crowned American Idol champ. Despite his win, the North Carolina native has managed to stay grounded. His unwavering connection with his fans is proof.

Since his 2011 Idol win, McCreery has graced stages all over the country including the hallowed Grand Ole Opry stage. Last summer, McCreery debuted a song that has gone on to become a concert staple. “Five More Minutes” was written by McCreery after he lost his grandfather and is, by far, one of the most emotional country songs ever performed at the Opry.

“I wrote this song a couple weeks after I lost my grandfather. We were very close. He’s never heard this song but I know he’s watching and very proud of me and the fact that I’m at the Grand Ole Opry tonight,” an emotional McCreery told the audience.

Throughout the song, McCreery relives special moments in his life including fishing in a creek when he was 8-years old, going on a date at 16, and talking to his football coach after losing a game. The song’s final verse gives listeners a glimpse into the final moments of McCreery’s grandfathers life.

“86, my grandpa said ‘There’s angels in the room.’
With all the family gathered ’round, we knew the time was comin’ soon.
With so much left to say I prayed,
‘Lord, I ain’t finished. Just give us five more minutes.'”

The emotional tune has become a favorite of Scotty McCreery’s fans as it connects him to those who are grieving losses or just learning to realize how quickly time passes.
