After months of anticipation, Shania Twain finally released new music in 2017 which came in the form of “Poor Me,” a heartbreaking new track detailing the painful mark infidelity leaves on a broken heart.

Taking a turn from her upbeat anthem and lead single, “Life’s About to Get Good,” off her album Now, “Poor Me” is a melancholy breakup song that explicitly references the low points of her past.

While the best-selling female artist in the history of country music may have been burned by those she regarded as the closest to her heart, she chooses to transform the pain into art.

“Even though it has the most sadness to it, as a songwriter, it was creatively very fun to write Poor Me,” she shared regarding the track via Twitter.

Along with the rest of the songs on her forthcoming album, Twain wrote “Poor Me” all by herself as an inspirational act of independence.

“That’s the farthest side of feeling really sorry for myself, you know, in life, and I’ve been there many times in my life over various things,” shared Twain with Rolling Stone. “To me, [that song] was the epitome of that emotion.”
