Season 13 of The Voice may be airing its battle rounds right now, but the coaches and crew are already well into working on Season 14. All of the blind auditions, battles, and knockout rounds are filmed months in advance so they can be edited and put together in time for the new season’s debut.
Going into Season 13, we already knew who three of the four coaches would be for Season 14: Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, and first-time coach Kelly Clarkson. Fans of the show have been anxiously waiting for an announcement revealing the fourth and final coach of the season, but one never came.
Even as the blind auditions started filming, the general public had no idea who was picked to be the fourth coach. So you can bet that anyone who showed up for the blinds was quite surprised when they learned who the unknown coach was.
Finally, The Voice filled us all in on who was selected as the fourth coach for Season 14. The show announced the big news through a funny video posted to its Facebook page on Wednesday (October 18).
Clarkson had the honor of introducing the fourth coach, and she was excited to do so. Standing outside of the building where The Voice is filmed, Clarkson shared that she was going to open the door behind her to reveal the fourth coach.
But when she opened the door, Shelton was the person standing there. She tried opening the door again, but only saw Levine. After opening the door a third time, she caught Shelton and Levine in the middle of a bromance moment.
Just when it seemed like all hope was lost concerning her reveal, Clarkson was happy to see the season’s fourth coach walk through Levine and Shelton and come out into the open. So who was it? We’ll give you two hints…you’ve seen her before, and she won the show before!
That’s right…Season 14’s fourth coach is none other than Alicia Keys! The reveal was especially surprising considering the fact that she left after Season 12 and shared no plans to ever return to the show. During an interview with ET at the time, she revealed that she wanted to focus on her music.
Shelton called her bluff during that interview, telling Keys that she would “be back next year and the year after that.” Well it looks like he was right!
